Report from an unusual studio visit

"Psychologists viewing art" is a project created by the psychologist Jonas Mosskin that deals with creative processes and art from a psychological perspective. He arranges public studio visits and guided tours in art exhibitions - sometimes together with his colleague Malin Emdin - where he discusses art and creativity with artists, curators and the general public. On September the 26 he and a small crowd of people visited my studio in Liljeholmen/Gröndal for a discussion that focused (as far as I recall) on artistic methodology, ways to deal with research in art and the phenomenon of process-based art. He has written a short report (in Swedish) from the visit that can be read at psykkonst.se/?p=193.

Dr. Keith Tidball, who is a Senior Extension Associate in the Department of Natural Resources at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, mentions 19 Years in an article for the blog "the Nature of Cities" titled "Greening in the Red Zone: Thoughts on disaster, resilience and community greening in the peopled landscape". Dr. Tidball, who experienced the animation when it was first shown at the Changing Matters exhibit at the international conference Resilience2008 at the University of Stockholm, focus in this article on another form of response to calamity than the protest:
"Another form of response is somewhat more muted, but in the end, perhaps equally, or even more profound. I am referring to the response by both individual and groups of humans to return to 'nature' when calamity strikes, to actively seek intimacy with other living things, to retreat (or advance!) to life-affirming interactions in verdant, alive contexts."

Review of Tolerera in Expo #2-2012

Louise Djurberg reviews the anthology Tolerera in the Swedish magazine Expo's June issue (#2 2012). Expo is published by The Expo Foundation, which according to their website "is a privately-owned research foundation founded in 1995 with the aim of studying and mapping anti-democratic, right-wing extremist and racist tendencies in society".
Djurberg has perfectly understood one significant point with the anthology when she writes:
"The authors are from different areas within the field of psychology, something which is reflected in the texts that differ from each other both in content and style. When reading the anthology at first it gives a rather sprawling impression - but there's a point with these differences. Together they form a whole that shows that the strength lies in acceptance of differences rather than in striving for conformity."
Other mentions in the press include an article by Liria Ortiz in the major Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter on August 3 and the June issue of Lärarnas Nyheter (The Teachers' News) and in Svenska Dagbladet by Ricki Neuman on May 5.

Kan man lära sig att bli mer tolerant mot andra människor? Hur kan man förstå begreppen tolerans och intolerans ur ett psykologiskt perspektiv?
Den 25 april 2012 släpptes Tolerera - en antologi om intolerans och tolerans ur ett psykologiskt perspektiv. Antologin är producerad av konstnären Jon Brunberg för utställningen P.K. - en utställning om intolerans som just nu visas på Forum för levande historia i Stockholm. Den tryckta versionen av antologin erbjuds lärare och skolor som fördjupningsmaterial i samband med de workshops som hålls för gymnasieelever i utställningen. Antologin kan också laddas ned i PDF-format som ett utbildningsmaterial från myndighetens webbplats.
Antologin Tolerera handlar om intoleransens och toleransens psykologiska dimension, så som den framträder i mötet mellan människor. Tolerera är en populärpsykologisk skrift som riktar sig till lärare inom gymnasieskolan, men den kan läsas av alla som vill lära sig mer om toleransens och intoleransens psykologi, som vill lära sig hur man kan inleda ett förändringsarbete i en mer tolerant riktning eller som behöver argument och inspiration i sitt arbete mot intolerans.
Psykoanalytikern Tomas Böhm och psykologerna Liria Ortiz och Fred Saboonchi har skrivit varsitt kapitel för antologin. Här ger de sin syn på hur tolerans och intolerans kan förstås ur ett psykologiskt perspektiv och presenterar metoder - eller "mentala verktygslådor" - som individer och grupper kan använda sig av för att öka sin egen tolerans mot andra människor och för att bemöta intolerans i sin omgivning.
Utställningen P.K. - en utställning om intolerans innehåller flera konstverk och konstinstallationer som har skapats med utgångspunkt från rapporten Den mångtydiga intoleransen, som Forum för levande historia presenterade 2010. Övriga medverkande konstnärer är Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin och Andrea Hvistendahl.

Om författarna
Fred Saboonchi är fil.dr. i psykologi, lektor i folkhälsovetenskap på Röda Korsets Högskola och forskare i beteendevetenskap vid Karolinska Institutet och Stressforskningsinstitutet vid Stockholms universitet. Han forskar om perfektionism, föreställningar om fullkomlighet, upplevda krav och reaktioner på tillkortakommanden, brister och avvikelser samt om psykologiska aspekter av att leva med kroniska sjukdomar. Fred Saboonchi har publicerat ett flertal vetenskapliga forskningsartiklar om dessa ämnen.
Tomas Böhm är leg. läkare, psykoanalytiker, leg. psykoterapeut, specialist i allmän psykiatri och författare. Han arbetar sedan flera år i psykoterapeutisk privatpraktik med individer och par. Specialintressen inom psykologin är kärleksrelationer, fördomar och främlingsfientlighet. Tomas Böhm har skrivit ett flertal böcker, bland andra: Inte som vi - psykologiska synpunkter på främlingsfientlighet och rasism, 1993, Att ha rätt - om ortodoxi och fundamentalism, 1996.
Liria Ortiz är leg. psykolog, leg. psykoterapeut och handledare med KBT-inriktning, utbildningskonsult, föreläsare och författare. Hon är utbildare i Motiverande samtal och medlem av nätverket MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers). Hon är också med i flera expertpaneler: på Insidan i Dagens Nyheter, i tidningen PS! Leva och på Psykologförbundets webbplats Psykologiguiden.
Jon Brunberg är bildkonstnär på frilansbasis med inriktning på digitala media och video och med ett speciellt intresse för samhällsfrågor och humaniora. Han deltar just nu, förutom i P.K. - en utställning om intolerans, i grupputställningen Data Deluge på Ballroom Marfa i Marfa, Texas. Några av hans tidigare projekt är The Polynational War Memorial och Utopist-VM.

At the moment you can see my work Tolerate in the group show P.C.-an exhibition about intolerance at the Living History Forum in Stockholm.
Venue: The Living History Forum, Stora Nygatan 10-12, Stockholm
Opening hours: September 15, 2011 - May 2012, Mon-Fri, noon to 5pm
Tolerate is a work in three parts: a two-channel video installation, 12:30 min, subtitled in English, an anthology, 112 pages, in Swedish, and a web-application (http://tolerera.se).
I've invited the psychoanalyst Tomas Böhm and the psychologists Liria Ortiz and Fred Saboonchi to participate in the video and the anthology, wherein they explain their views on tolerance and intolerance, and present psychological tools or methods that can be used by those who wish to become more tolerant, or who are in need of arguments or inspiration in their work against intolerance. It should be noted that they don't participate in the web-application.

The primary target audience for the exhibition are students in the ages 16 to 19 years, who will view and interact with the works together with pedagogues in two hours long workshops. The venue is open for regular visitors as well but you should be aware that a workshop could be held in the venue while you are there and that you may have to wait a few minutes to see some of the works.
Other participating artists are Andrea Hvistendahl och Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin. The interior desigers Guise has designed the exhibition space.

About the participants:
Tomas Böhm is a certified psychoanalyst, certified psychoterapist, specialist in general psychiatry and author. Liria Ortiz is a certified psychologist, certified psychoterapist and a supervisor specialising in CBT, as well as being a training consultant, lecturer and author. Fred Saboonchi has a PhD in psychology, and is a lecturer at the Red Cross University and a researcher at Karolinska Insitutet and Stockholm University.
En ofrivillig hobbypoliticos bekännelser - ny text för tsnoK
tsnoK är en publikation som "är ett försök att skriva om konst och bedriva kritik på ett annat sätt", enligt dess redaktion som består av Lars-Erik Hjertström-Lappalainen, Annika von Hausswolff, Jonatan Habib Engqvist. Jag har skrivit en text för tsnoK som handlar om mitt andra liv som anonym "hobbypolitico" under åren 2005-2008 och hur den hobbyn påverkat mitt konstnärskap.

'19 years' was produced for the exhibition 'Changing Matters', which was arranged by Stockholm Resilience Centre at the Museum of Nature History in Stockholm in 2008. It displays over 1800 events in more than 500 places, in chronological order, from 1989 to 2007, on a black and white political map. These events were popular mass-protests, such as demonstrations or rallies, where several thousands of people took to the streets in protest.
A cropped, low resolution video preview of the work has now been released on Vimeo. The original work consists of a Flash application, in which the animation is created programmatically on-the-fly with actionscript and xml, which means that it can easily be updated with new events. The Flash application is also used when the work is exhibited.
Art and politics - two reports and one blog
In 2010 I was invited to participate in a couple of seminars, talks and meetings, which examined the role of the artist in a political context. Reports from two of these were recently published and are available online.

Jon Brunberg, one of the initiators of the Utopian World Championship, talks to the winner of the first U.W.C. in 2001, Anthony T. Fiscella, about his essay "The New World Disorder," and his view on utopianism and politics and the role of Utopias in contemporary society. Anthony T. Fiscella is a researcher in the field of history of religion at the University of Lund and has recently written a book on anarchy and Islam.
The third Utopian World Championship has started!
Join the quest for Utopia by participating in the Utopian World Championship, which is a global, open contest in utopian thinking and writing. You participate with an essay, or short story, in which you describe your utopian vision. The first prize is 1000 Euro and the winning entry will be printed and distributed by the UWC group. The competition is planned to finish in 2011 to mark the ten-year anniversary of its start in 2001.
The third Utopian W.C. was launched in an opening ceremony at the Knot, on Kopa Cwila in Ursynów, Warsaw, Poland, on July 3 at 7pm.
You can sign up for participation at the web site utopianwc.com, where you can also read the rules for the previous championships, and all about the previous participants and their essays. For visitors to Kopa Cwila hill there will also be an information desk for the Utopian W.C. where you can sign up and get more information.

The Utopian World Championship at the Knot
The Utopian World Championship will participate in the Knot when it stops in Ursynów, Warsaw, June 22-July 4, where Jon Brunberg will present the project in several ways. There will be daily, public, readings from the participating essays and seminars with the Knot's inhabitants.
New work for Documentalities.org
Documentalities is the name of the 2009-2010 version of the thematic seminar course Art and Architecture at the Royal College for Fine Arts in Stockholm, in which I've been participating. The course has focused on various aspects of the document in forms of borders, passports, photography and archives and included a round trip in the middle east in October 2009. This year has been focused on artistic projects on the theme that are now shown at the spring exhibition of the Royal Academy in Stockholm, opening at June 26 and closing at July 6.
I've created a study for a larger work for this exhbition, titled 124 years, that can be seen as a continuation of the works 101 years and 19 years. You can view the work as an animation at the website documentalities.org from May 26.
Upcoming: Kulturnatten Stockholm at Moderna Museet
Culture Night Stockholm is a cultural event that involves a large number of institutions in Stockholm.
It takes place Saturday April 24, 2010, 6-10 pm. I will participate at Moderna Museet, Skeppsholmen, Stockholm with the work The Power Tool, which was recently exhibited in the Studio at Moderna Museet.

"Tolerera" (in English: "Tolerate") is an anthology that focuses on the psychological perspectives on intolerance and tolerance, from the starting point that a more tolerant society is both possible and necessary.
In this anthology the psychoanalyst Tomas Böhm and the psychologists Fred Saboonchi and Liria Ortiz give their views on how intolerance and tolerance can be understood in psychological terms, and present tools and methods that can be used by anyone who needs knowledge and inspiration in their work against intolerance, or to be able to become more tolerant. Editor: Jon Brunberg. The book is in the Swedish language only.
The book is a part of the artwork "Tolerera" that was produced by Jon Brunberg for the exhibition "P.C. - an exhibition about intolerance", which is shown at the Living History Forum throughout 2012.
